Petitions for Release of Confidential Criminal Justice Information
In recent months, Montana has seen an uptick in immigration-related investigations involving local law enforcement. Where government actions affect the liberty, privacy, and due-process rights of individuals, particularly in the context of cooperation with federal immigration authorities, the public has a compelling interest in understanding how those actions are carried out. Montana’ Constitution recognizes a strong right of access to government information. Through petitions for the release of Confidential Criminal Justice Information (CCJI), which could include investigative files, witness interviews, certain reports, body cam footage and more, we aim to ensure that law-enforcement practices remain transparent, lawful, and consistent with constitutional protections. By seeking the release of this information through the courts, we aim to uphold Montana’s constitution right to know and promote accountability in government operations for all Montanans.
